It is too early to tell whether Spes is able to eliminate prostate cancer on the long run, but it seems to halt any progression for an as yet uncertain time period, perhaps 1 year or more. Therefore PC Spes can be most valuable when used to buy time to address the systemic cause of the cancer, so as to
discontinue PC Spes when the PSA returns to normal.

What is PC SPES?

PC SPES is a unique blend of herbs which contain specific properties that enhance the immune system. It provides multiple benefits to prostate cancer patients. The very name of the product is indicative of the hope that it offers: PC stands for "prostate cancer" and spes is Latin for "Hope". PC SPES is meant to help prostate cancer patients either by saving their lives or, at least, by extending their survival time. This carefully formulated group of herbs was developed by chemist Sophie Chen, Ph.D., and her colleagues, Allan Wang, M.D., and Hui Fu Wang, M.D., who integrated modern science and ancient wisdom.

Properties of PC SPES

Some of the properties of PC SPES include:

1. It neutralizes free radicals through antioxidant action.
2. It lowers or raises red blood cell count depending on need.
3. It lowers or raises white blood cell count depending on needs.
4. It is nontoxic.
5. It has a distinct anti-toxic action against a wide range of toxins.
6. It induces cancer cell death.
7. It is good for the central nervous system.
8. It suppresses the cancer gene bcl-2.
9. It suppresses androgen receptor growth.

Limitations of PC SPES

PC SPES will lose its effectiveness when:

3. You have the flu.
4. You are experiencing physical stress, such as that caused by surgery, wounds, or injuries.

This is because PC SPES works with the immune system. When our body is facing a new foreign invasion (such as bacteria, a virus, etc.), our immune system will deal with this invasion first. The effect of PC SPES on the immune system becomes a secondary action to its response to the invasion.

Theories on How PC SPES Combats Prostate Cancer

In order to comprehend how PC SPES may work, it is necessary to understand the growth of prostate cancer. When prostate cancer grows, the growth of new blood vessels is stimulated. Cancerous cells leak from microscopic gaps in these new blood vessels, allowing the cancer to enter the bloodstream. These
cells then travel through the blood in order to find a receptive area where even more cancerous cells can be produced.

In addition to spreading through the bloodstream, certain chemical elements within the body can affect the growth of prostate cancer. Dr. Sheldon Marks, a urologist, has reported that a substance called spermine has been shown in laboratory experiments to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. The fact
that spermine is found primarily within the prostate gland may be why prostate cancer grows so rapidly once it has spread outside of the gland.

PC SPES contains concentrated phytochemicals including flavonoids, alkanoids, polysaccharides, amino acids, and trace elements (such as selenium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper). All these compounds have known pharmacological effects on cancer cells. Laboratory research data reported the following partial
actions of PC SPES: it can modulate the cancer cell cycle and cause very slow cancer cell growth; at the same time, it kills cancer cells by suppressing the cancer gene bcl-2, suppressing androgen receptors, and inactivating the PSA gene.
Safety Data

If you have an infection, delay taking PC SPES until the infection has completely cleared. PC SPES should be stored in a cool, dry place, and kept out of the reach of children. PC SPES does not interfere with conventional treatments, and can be ingested prior to, during, or after therapy. PC SPES has also been found to be beneficial to patients who are and are not undergoing conventional treatments.

Can PC SPES Decrease the PSA Level without Diminishing the Tumor?

Is it possible for PC SPES to decrease a patient's PSA level, yet not reduce the tumor burden: Many prostate cancer patients have asked Dr. Lewis this question, prompting him to do some further investigation. He spoke with several patients undergoing PC SPES treatment. In addition, the author also
consulted Dr. Abraham Mittelman, one of the physicians conducting a pilot study of PC SPES. Although Dr. Mittelman indicated that some patients had a notable decrease in their PSA levels but only a small effect on their tumors, a very large number of patients had experienced a marked decrease in both their
PSA level and tumor burden.

As seen from microscopic photographs, laboratory experiments show that PC SPES can effectively kill cancer cells and has no effect on normal white blood cells. Laboratory data also reveals that the reason the PSA level in a cancer cell decreases is that androgen receptors on the cancer cell surface are
suppressed, causing an inactivation of the PSA gene which, in turn, induces cancer cell death.

To understand why PC SPES can lower a patient's PSA level without having a dramatic effect on his tumor, it is important to understand how the treatment works. PC SPES is a dietary supplement designed to enhance the body's immune system. Unfortunately, a prostate cancer patient's immune system can
become very debilitated as a result of his overall health, the progression of the disease, or the effects of chemotherapy agents. When this occurs, no therapy can restore the immune system in a short time, no matter how healthy the patient appears to be. In some patients, PC SPES still attempts to fight the prostate cancer. The dietary supplement decreases the PSA levels but does little to affect the tumor. These patients have a condition known as immune refractory disease due to a poor immune system. For instance, if a patient has

an infection, the flu, or a physical trauma, PC SPES may lose its effectiveness. This is because the immune system is working hard to fight the acute crisis and may not respond to PC SPES.

Although it is possible for PC SPES to decrease a patient's PSA level without reducing his tumor burden, Dr. Lewis has encountered far more instances where the treatment has done both. For example, one patient with a PSA level of 40.01 ng/ml took 2700 mg of PC SPES for a little more than two months. His
PSA dropped to 3.5 ng/ml. A post-treatment ProstaScint scan was compared to a pretreatment scan, and the pathologist's report revealed "a marked interval regression of the disease". Another patient indicated that he had an RT-PCR PSA test to confirm the effect of PC SPES on his tumor. The result showed no
evidence of the disease in the patient's body. Another man had pre- and post-treatment ProstaScint scans. Again, the results indicated that, after the patient had taken PC SPES as a supplement, there was no evidence of the disease.

Side Effects

It is too early to identify all of the side effects of PC SPES. In addition, patients may or may not experience the potential side effects, depending on their health, other drugs they are taking, and the stage of their disease. For example, PC SPES is being used by nearly 1000 prostate cancer patients throughout the United States, and eight reportedly have experienced blood clots in their legs and lungs while using the supplement in conjunction with other drugs. As a result, these patients were also given Coumadin, a blood
thinner, along with PC SPES.

A majority of these eight patients had a history of blood clots prior to their intake of PC SPES. Furthermore, monitoring the changes in the concentrations of blood-clotting factors and estrogen in serum among some PC SPES users reveals that PC SPES has no direct effect on their concentrations. However,
patients taking more than 6 capsules per day, or those who have a family history of clot disorders should consult with their physicians. In general, it is recommended that cancer patients undergoing PC SPES treatment take anticoagulation agents such as aspirin, Coumadin, Heparin, or wobenzymes, because they have a higher chance of developing blood clots than do patients who are not taking PC SPES.

A number of patients have complained of nipple soreness and enlargement, which are also (temporary) side effects of hormonal therapy. If this condition becomes too difficult for the patient to bear, the dosage of PC SPES can be reduced.

The patient with the longest history on the PC SPES began treatment when his PSA level was 169 ng/ml, and now, after 19 months, he has an undetectable PSA. Several studies are currently being conducted around the nation at various medical centers.
